Winter of 2010 Report

Here in west central Illinois the low temperature dropped to minus
- 12 F in mid January and remained there for several days. We have
not observed any damage to either the buds or the wood. One good
aspect of this sub zero cold period was that it occurred when it was
supposed to, when the vines were their most dormant and it was
preceded by a gradual cooling period with no unseasonably warm
weather.

Freeze and Frost Update 2007

Good News !!!

In both our vineyards in central Missouri and Ilinois we experienced
minimal damage on DVR vines due to the spring frost of 17 degree F.
One reason for this was that the DVRs budded out later than all the other
vines, including Norton. On neighboring vineyards there was extensive
damage on Chardonel, Vidal and other French Hybrids and in many
cases it looked as if the trunks will have to be renewed.

On the DVRs the combination of late budding and excellent winter
hardiness seems to have spared the vines, and the crop. The pictures
below are of Crimson Cab as of May 8, 2007.
